Scholarship Information

The Our Voices Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that recognizes Arkansas' middle & high school writers, photographers, storytellers, poets, and artists from minority and traditionally underrepresented groups.

Eligibility Requirements

Be a current middle or high school student 

Belong to an underrepresented racial group or other minority (includes women and people with disabilities)
Demonstrate a strong interest in creating content
Demonstrate a keen understanding of how news can challenge toxic narratives

Award and Application Process

The purpose of the Our Voices scholarship is to attract students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the process of creating and publishing news. 

Our Voices will award one $1200 scholarship. Applicants should complete this application form by the January 25th deadline. 

As part of your application, you will be asked to submit an original piece. All submissions are eligible for publication in Our Voices newspaper.  However, publication of your work does not guarantee that you will be awarded the scholarship. All applicants will be added to our mailing list and prioritized for the 2023 Our Voices Newspaper Program. 

Types of Original Work

You may submit the following types original work:

1. News Story: A story consisting of time-relevant, fact-based news. May be hard news or feature stories.

2. Editorial: A written piece that focuses on your opinion of a current event or social issue.

3. Creative Piece: An original writing that expresses your ideas and thoughts in an imaginative way. May include short stories, poetry, and personal essays.

4. Visual Art: Original paintings, drawings, printmaking, sculptures, ceramics, photography
